We’ve all got a dream job that we’d love to have. That position that we think ‘if only’ or one we know we would be perfect for. Maybe you’re a new university graduate with little idea of what the future might hold, or perhaps even you’re stuck at a job you find unfulfilling. That’s where these tips can help you. As scary as the process of job hunting might be and no matter how daunting it may be to make that first step towards your new position, by carefully identifying the first steps you make your passion your new career. Sadly, this short guide won’t help become a professional footballer at Manchester United or a Formula One driver, but it will help you begin to think of the steps you can take to land your perfect position.
Work on your CV. Your current CV isn’t a one size fits all, it needs to be tailored each time according to where you are applying to. Back up your skills with evidence, such as showing the employer how you achieved that particular skill. It’s also a good idea to know how these skills might benefit the company you are applying to and how this could help make you the perfect candidate for the role. Alongside that, create a cover letter, or edit your existing one, so that it suits the company you are applying to. This is one of the best ways to really sell yourself, so remember to show off your enthusiasm as well as highlighting relevant experience and skills that you have. Another great thing to do is to show the employer that you have gone that extra mile and taken the time to research the company you are applying to, and even more importantly the job description. This might seem like an obvious point, but it’s something that can be overlooked.
Know what to look for. When searching for a new job, narrow the focus down to search for what you are truly interested in. Don’t settle for something that doesn’t excite or interest you. Applying for something you are 100% passionate about doing will show through to the interviewer and give you that extra shot of landing that job. Remember, the more effort you put in to applying for a job (especially one that ticks all your boxes) the greater the chance of getting it. So, have a goal in mind that will help you to identify steps in achieving what to look for, and also what to avoid.
If you aren’t exactly sure what your dream job is yet, there are online quizzes you can take to help get an idea of what you want (or even to take just for fun). We recommend:
Don’t underestimate the power of networking. This isn’t just a group of people you know gathered together on your social media pages. These are professional people who can help you stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs. Having that contact who can speak for your skills and achievements can really make all the difference. This could be anyone from an old colleague to an old classmate. You might even find that positions may be offered to you directly from using sites such as LinkedIn. Make effort as well to continuously expand your network, even if you aren’t looking for a new job. Attend those networking events on LinkedIn and start up those relationships.
Stay positive. Every action you take you get your dream job, no matter how small, is still a step in the right direction. It’s still helping you to move that one bit closer to achieving your end goal. Every set back or challenge you face is just one part of the journey you’ll take during this process. Remember that there are things in life you can’t control, like if and when the employer calls you back. Don’t spend your time dwelling or worrying about these things, try to look forward and place your energy elsewhere. Think about what you can control at this time, like networking, and go from there.
Check back in. Show the interviewer you are enthusiastic about the position and send a thank you email or follow up to the interviewer. When checking in again, remember that interviewers often see a large number of people for a wide range of positions so its very likely that they might not remember you. Avoid any awkwardness by stating the position you interviewed for and the date you saw them. State your continued interest in the post and appreciation for being seen. This email isn’t a chance to pack in more information to try and help your application, that should all have been done in the interview.
Hopefully, this guide has given you some inspiration or motivation to make the first steps towards achieving your dream job. Don’t be put off or intimated by the process, once you land that job it will all seem worth it. Keep your end goal in your mind and retain your passion. With this, there’s nothing you can’t achieve.
